Sunir J. Garg, MD, FACS, FASRS is Professor of Ophthalmology at the Retina Service of Wills Eye Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University, and is a partner with Mid Atlantic Retina. He is co-director of the Retina Research Unit at Wills Eye Hospital and serves as principal investigator on many clinical trials.
He received both his Bachelor of Science with Honors and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Michigan and completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Michigan where he was appointed Chief Resident. He attended Wills Eye Hospital for his retina fellowship.
In addition to being the editor or co-editor of four textbooks, he has authored over 400 papers, articles, and book chapters. He is immediate past Editor-in-Chief of Retina Times, an official publication of the American Society of Retina Specialists, ophthalmology editor for the Merck Manual, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the American Academy of Ophthalmology ONE Network, and serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Ophthalmology and the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. He is past president of the Greater Philadelphia Ophthalmology Society and is Chair of the Wills Eye Annual Conference. Dr. Garg is a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and twice has received the Secretariat Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Senior Honor Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists and is the recipient of the inaugural Women in Retina Champion Award. He is a member of the Retina Society, the Macula Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Uveitis Society, and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
He is actively involved in treating patients and conducting clinical trials for conditions including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, complex retinal detachments, retinal vascular diseases, retinal degenerations, macular puckers and holes, and ocular inflammation. Dr. Garg is listed among “The Best Ophthalmologists” in the United States.
Dr. Garg has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the Philadelphia Inquirer, on the online editions of Popular Science and Billboard magazine, and on Medscape/WebMD, the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC), and Good Morning America.
